3D Practice: Maya Layered Shader Tests

I’m studying the book ‘The Special Effects Handbook’, Learning Maya (Official Training Guide) by Alias (yes I know it’s an old book). I’ve come to the section about layered shaders, so I created perhaps my first multi-layered shader and tried it out on a simple 3d scene:


Here is the fairly simple shading network. I also applied some of the shaders in the network to some of the geometry. What I never tried before was layering a layered shader into a new layered shader! :


It would appear as if no displacement is available for the layered shaders, but perhaps there’s a way around that if I want actual displacement. I’ll need to look into it more, but I also want to get to the next chapter…
