Tip: SyncToy 2.0 for backing up folders

Posted on Thursday, 14 August 2008

I have been testing the Microsoft tool SyncToy 2.0 today; for backing up data between drives/folders. These are the 3 main options; Synchronize, Echo and Contribute. From what I have read in the manual; Echo is the option to use; when you want to copy everything new and changed from “left” to your “right”; which would seem like what I am after:

The echo action will make copies of files that are new and changed on the left to the right. New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames and deletes on the left are repeated on the right. Folder creates, folder deletes and folder updates on the left are repeated on the right. Echo is very similar to Synchronize, except Echo works only left to right. Echo is the SyncToy action to use.

No left folder files are deleted, or renamed.
No files are copied from right to left.
Right folder files are deleted.

The reason why I am trying this app out is that it seems easier to use than RoboCopy GUI, at least it gives some visual feedback about what file(s) are currently copying.
