Illustrating and coloring some more parts for an animation

Posted on Tuesday, 20 January 2015

For a recent animation for ARCHIE-WeSt, here is a very basic example of a simple character illustration before and after digital coloring. When illustrating and coloring, the characters and scenery are often created in parts and layers.

before and after coloring

A lot of artwork is required for an animation we create. Most illustrations for this animation were sketched and inked on paper, then scanned and colored on the computer. Compositing of all the character, props and scenery artwork is done later. Below are some other illustrations for using in the ARCHIE-WeSt animation, these are just for one or two scenes, there are a lot more artwork for all the other scenes required.

We use all sort of techniques for our videos, it all depends on the project. However, almost all the artwork in the videos on this website were sketched and inked on paper, scanning them later on.

It all starts with doodling in a notebook, like for example a Moleskine Notebook, or sometimes on plain A4 paper. For pens, we use anything from pigment liners to pencils. At the moment a favorite is STAEDTLER pigment liner 0.05. For drawing digital, we use a Wacom Intous 3 most of the time.

While drawing or working on the computer, listening to music is always enjoyable. Spotify is great and currently listening a lot to Tycho and Com Truise (instrumental).

For animated videos with long camera pans, we create really long illustrated backgrounds to allow for these pans later. For this video there was not any long camera pans, but for most of the videos we create there are.

We recently completed this animation for ARCHIE-WeSt and here is the resulting video:

ARCHIE-WeSt Explainer Video

ARCHIE-WeSt is a regional supercomputer centre in Glasgow at the University of Strathclyde dedicated to research excellence and wealth creation in the West of Scotland.

We really loved working on this project and we were very happy with the great feedback from the client. Doing an animation for ARCHIE-WeSt has been on our “to-do” list for quite a long time and it’s now something we can tick off. Actually we ended up not making only one video but two!
