Track After Effects Rendering on iPad via Wi-Fi

Posted on Saturday, 7 September 2013

It’s possible to Track After Effects Rendering on iPad via Wi-Fi using the iPad as an extra monitor. Here seen using Air Display. This allows you to be away from the workstation computer while waiting for a long render, while still being able to keep an eye on the render progress and frame rendering times in seconds:

Track AE Render via iPad

This is very useful if it’s a really long render and you need to know if the rendering has failed at some point, so you can restart it.

The way it’s setup here is using an iPad as a 3rd screen, putting the rendering progress information windows on this extra iPad screen estate.

With a software like Air Display (PC & Mac) you can mirror your computer display or use as an extra monitor. Here it’s used as an extra and the render progress has been placed on there.

What’s really nice is that you can now walk away from the computer, view the render progress, even use touch display to interact with the computer on the iPad.

This allows you to sit back (if you are not working on something else) and watch the latest episode of Breaking Bad or Dexter (optional) while you know how far the render has progressed, the render time in seconds for each frame and the frame number.

If you have a laptop that you can track the render on, this may not be for you, but for anyone that use a workstation and have a fast Wi-Fi connection, this could be pretty useful.

Please do comment on this post and if you try this out and what you think.

Hopefully this guide / post has been helpful.

Setup: PC or Mac, BG Renderer, Air Display App, iPad (tested on version 6.1.3).
